TRANSMISSION FLUID NOTES / Dodge

Caravan 62TE fluid check: temperature gives the dipstick reading its meaning.

Important reading alongside the shorter Grand Caravan fluid-check video: use actual transmission-fluid temperature, measured fluid height and the correct application chart.

Melvin’s shorter Grand Caravan video shows his transmission-fluid check. Before interpreting a dipstick reading on a 62TE, keep the temperature-based measurement in mind.

The marks are not a universal full range.

For the 62TE, check the actual transmission-fluid temperature and compare the measured fluid height with the correct chart. Engine temperature alone does not establish transmission-fluid temperature. Do not assume the transmission needs a particular amount of fluid from shifting symptoms or the distance below a mark.

Have the information ready before measuring

Confirm the transmission fitted to your van, obtain the correct service procedure and fluid-level chart for that application, and use the specified measuring tool. You also need a way to read actual transmission-fluid temperature, such as a compatible scan tool. A coolant-temperature gauge does not supply that measurement.

Record both parts of the reading

Follow the vehicle’s specified setup and measuring procedure. Record the transmission-fluid temperature and the measured fluid height together, then compare them with the correct chart. A mark or coloured band on a generic tool cannot establish the level on its own. Do not force a measuring tool into the fill tube or improvise its insertion depth.

Avoid guessing how much to add

Shifting behaviour does not tell you a fluid quantity, and a distance below a mark is not a reliable conversion to litres or quarts. If the verified measurement calls for adjustment, use the correct fluid and adjustment procedure, then recheck. A fluid-level check is one part of diagnosis; it does not establish the cause of every transmission symptom.

Watch with these notes beside you

Keep these notes beside the video below. They clarify the limits of interpreting the visible dipstick marks and engine warm-up. For the exact chart, fluid specification and setup, use the manufacturer’s service information for your vehicle.

For another Caravan project, read the shift-solenoid repair and two-year follow-up notes. When asking about a fluid check in the linked video’s comments, include your year, transmission, measuring tool, actual fluid temperature and measured height.
