Before checking the level

Use actual transmission-fluid temperature and measured fluid height with the correct 62TE chart. Engine temperature and generic dipstick marks alone do not establish the correct level. Read the fluid-check clarification →

A shorter edit of Melvin’s Grand Caravan transmission-fluid check. Read the temperature and dipstick clarification before interpreting a level reading.

VEHICLE IN THE VIDEO

Dodge Grand Caravan with a 62TE, as identified in the narration

WHAT’S COVERED

Locating the capped transmission fill tube and demonstrating a marked-stick fluid check. Read the temperature clarification alongside the demonstration.

PARTS CONTEXT

This is a level-check demonstration, not a fluid replacement or an instruction to add a stated quantity.

RECORDED RESULT

The narration concludes that the fluid is low. That conclusion and the stated quantity cannot be established from the shown fixed band without an actual fluid-temperature measurement and the correct chart.

Tools used or discussed

  • Measuring tape and marker used in the demonstration
  • Engine oil dipstick used in the demonstration; its markings are not a universal 62TE full range

The video is an example, not a complete tool or parts specification for every vehicle. Its runtime is not the time required to complete the job.

READ AT YOUR OWN PACE

The video, in words.

Reflowed from YouTube’s automatic captions. Caption wording may contain errors; this is a record of the narration, not a separately verified repair procedure. Editorial clarifications below are separate from what was spoken.

Read alongside the original narration

The marks are not a universal full range. For the 62TE, compare actual transmission-fluid temperature and measured fluid height with the correct chart. Engine temperature alone does not establish transmission-fluid temperature. Shifting symptoms or distance below a mark do not establish how much fluid to add.

0:00What the video covers

0:00 This is something that can help a lot of people out that own a Dodge Caravan. They have the 62TE transmission. Uh they don't have a transmission dipstick, so you can't check the transmission. But there is a way you can do it on your own.

0:18Locating the capped fill tube

0:18 On the left side, you have your oil stick. If you look and here's your battery right here, and if you look way down there, I don't know if you can see it on the camera or not, you'll see that there's a little stopper right there. Right where my finger is, there is a little knob, stopper, whatever you want to call it, right there. So, if you unscrew that one, this is the stopper right here. And as you can see, it says right on it for dealer use only, okay? Uh the way you check your transmission fluid in this is you actually pull your oil stick, clean off your oil stick, up in the window, up right here, I'm going to put or actually, no, I'm going to make a full screen for you. I'm going to put a little diagram with the transmission or the oil stick,

1:15 sorry, the oil stick against a a graph that shows you where on the stick it has to be in the safe position.

1:31Marking demonstration — read the clarification

1:31 But I'm going to explain it now very carefully, okay? So, you take your measuring tape, as you can see, and you place it on the guide end it right at 1 and 9/16, okay? So, one you So, you put it on your 2 and 1/16 up right here. You see, you got your two and 1/16, that's right here. That's 2 and 1/16. At the bottom, you put a mark on your measuring tape at 1 and 9/16. Anybody that can't read a measuring tape, I'll just explain that quickly to you. You have your one right here, and just count the 16ths in between till you get up to the nine. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. You just count each 16th. Take your marker or your Sharpie, put a little line right there, like that. Okay?

2:29 And then, you put a line up on your 2 and 1/16. You see 2 and 1/16. So, right here again. Now, that's the line. That is the area where it's safe on the stick. So, now that you have that done, you can take your move your paper. You don't need this now, okay? You have the area now that you can place it on your oil stick. Okay, so now that your graph is done, you have your measurements on your measuring tape, and you know the area where you have to be, make sure when you put the oil stick on the measuring tape, make sure it's 100% flush at the end. And now, all you do is mark out your 2/16, which is right here. And then, mark out your 1 and 9/16, which is right here.

3:31 Now that you made those lines, all you have to do now is just color that in on the oil stick, okay? So, just color it in on the oil stick. I'm guessing you guys can see this. It's not very clear. Okay, so that's done. Transmission fluid level is in between the that black mark, then your transmission fluid is safe.

3:59Warm-up and gear-cycle discussion

3:59 Okay, so guys, now that you've seen the the the the measurements, now you know where your stick needs to be. Before you check the transmission, you just want to take it for a just a quick little 15-second drive, okay? Like 15-20-second little drive, just to get the transmission fluid up and around, okay? So, we're going to do that now. We're just going to go for a quick little ride. So, now the vehicle is warmed up, the transmission is warmed up. Take it and just run her through her gears, guys. Just just put it in drive, wait a minute, go back up to reverse, put it in park, back down to reverse, down to drive again, put it up in park. Now, you're ready to check your fluid.

4:51Reading the marked stick

4:51 Okay, guys. So, as you saw, I took it for a ride. The engine is at running temperature, transmission is at running temperature. You saw I went through the gears. I have my mark on my oil stick, as you can see. Now, we have to be right in the center to be safe of that black line, okay? That's where we have to be, right in the center. Expecting the fluid level is going to be a little bit low. Okay? So, right down to the bottom seal. Pull it up. And I am correct. So, this transmission fluid level is not up in the safe. It's actually where my finger is, right here. That's where my level is. It needs to be up here. So, also, guys, it's good to double-check. Remember we got our mark, we know where our mark is. It's really good to double-check the level again. Right down till it bottoms out. It'll stop. Don't worry, it will stop. It will in the ending of it.

5:53 Pull it up. And again, I can see that I am low on the stick. So guys,

6:18Fluid-quantity discussion — read the clarification

6:18 so there you have it, guys. I'm right here. I'm down about 1 qt. I need to be up in the safe area where we took our measurements. And that's where I need to be. So I'm down 1 qt of transmission fluid. And guys, what do I always say? If I can find an easy way to do something so it don't cost you money, that's why I created the channel in the first place. If I can save you money, I'm going to do that every time. And this is a fail-safe way. I am telling you I did a lot of investigation on this, and this is a fail-safe way. It's 100% accurate because the graph is from Chrysler. So, that is the accurate way to check your transmission fluid level. Now, on another side, I knew that this transmission was low by the way the vehicle was operating. So I knew it had to be a little low. And according to the measurements I made and the measurements

7:08 I got, and how I did this check, it showed me it was a quart low. So I know even if I didn't have a graph, even if I didn't have anything, I knew it was low and I would have just added a half quart or quart anyway until I didn't have these issues happening in the transmission. Now, with that being said, you should never refill like over never overfill your transmission fluid, okay? Because that's not good on your trans, either. So you should never overfill it. Make sure you double-check, triple-check. I did. I triple-checked all these measurements and made sure that I was doing it properly to put that mark on that oil dipstick. Uh if you need more verification, check out other YouTube videos. You'll see everybody is doing it the same way as what I just did, okay?

7:51Recap of the recorded method

7:51 So, let's recap. Run your engine engine temperature. When you stop, park, reverse, neutral, drive, park, reverse, neutral, drive, and repeat that two or three times. Keep the engine running. Pull your oil stick. Clean your stick. Make your measurements. Make your mark. Put your oil stick down inside that transmission hole. It'll bottom out. You'll You'll feel it right away instantly. It'll bottom out. When it stops going down, that's when you pull it up. And as you guys saw, I showed you on the video, I was right here, and I'm down a quart. I need to be in anywhere between this black area is where I need to be, okay? And that's it, guys. That's it.
